Origin of the name GolaghatThe name Golaghat originated from two words “Gola’ which means shop and “ghat’ which means the landing point of ferries from river. This name originated from the shops built by the Marwari businessmen way back in the 20th century at the banks of the river Dhansiri.
Geography of GolaghatGolaghat is bounded by the Brahmaputra River on the North, Karbi Anglong on the South, Jorhat on the East and Nagaon on the west. It is a sister town to Jorhat which is located around 5 kms away from Golaghat. The total area of the district is 3502.00 Sq. Km.
History of GolaghatThe ancient relics and stone inscriptions reveal the presence of a kingdom dating back to the 5th century in the Doyang-Dhansiri valley. This valley was under the rule of the Ahom dynasty during 16th century. Before this, this valley was ruled by the Kacharis known as Herombial. During the British rule thereafter, the Doyang-Dhansiri valley was included in the Golaghat subdivision of the Sibsagar district in 1846. However, Golaghat was later recognized as a full-fledged district on 15th August 1987. During this rule, Golaghat developed with great iconic figures and colonial buildings being built which are recognized till today.
Demography of GolaghatGolaghat recorded a population of 10,66,888 in 2011 Census. The literacy rate stands at 82% and the percentage of males to females is 53% to 47%.
